It turns out that Sen. Mike Duffy will be allowed to have his case in full view of the public, as Conservative senators agree to have the routinely secretive committee to be open about its review of Sen. Duffy’s Senate expenses. It was expected that the Tories will make use of majority in the upper chamber on Tuesday afternoon to make the Senate’s internal economy committee to hold public meetings as it reviews Duffy’s audit of his Senate living expenses.

A Liberal member of the committee in favor of making the hearings public, George Furey, stated that “this has to be a first step by members of the Senate to help restore some confidence in this institution.” The committee had remained under great pressure by several sources to make the hearings open, a call which was also upheld by Senator Duffy himself last week. However, Conservative Senate leader, Marjory LeBreton, refrained from directly addressing the issue last week, when he alleged that it was completely up to the committee to decide whether or not it wants the investigation to public.

It has now been finalized that Tories are in favor of opening the process for public scrutiny. Speaking to reporters at the Parliament hill on Tuesday, Liberal Sen. Art Eggleton emphasized that “We need answers.” Meanwhile, Prime Minister Stephen Harper is expected to face some scorching and tough scrutiny by the opposition MPs at the Question Period in the House of Commons on Tuesday.
