Toronto streets have been overly flooded this morning due to extremely heavy overnight rainfall, which resulted in parts of the busy Don Valley Parkway being covered with water for almost a metre high and lead to a complete traffic closure. Eventually, The Don River flooded out its banks and left the DVP, i.e. a major expressway connecting the Gardiner Expressway into the downtown area with Highway 401, closed in both directions. Police confirmed that the DVP has been closed and is anticipated to remain closed for “several more hours,” and possibly into the afternoon commute.

Toronto police Staff Sgt., Bob Bowman, reported that the police started closing the DVP one lane at a time until the water started taking over the highway. He stated that “it’s the first time I’ve seen it in my 30 years that we actually had water cresting almost up to the jersey barrier of the Don Valley Parkway.” Bowman explained “so we had to put in a closure until that water dissipates.” Several vehicles were seen trying to move through rain-covered streets, with water as high as vehicle doors.

Authorities confirmed that 60 millimetres of rain had fallen in Toronto by 2 a.m. ET, however the downpour seemed to have lessened and a heavy rainfall warning was lifted around 6 a.m. The transport carrying more than 259,500 passengers on a typical weekday, GO Transit, also suspended train service at Oriole and Old Cummer stations on the Richmond Hill line.
