Ontario Superior Court Justice, M. Gregory Ellies, acquitted a Toronto police constable, 49-year-old Glenn Weddell, against the allegations of assaulting a bystander at a G20 summit protest almost three years ago. Justice Ellies ruled that Weddell was not found guilty of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon for the injuries inflicted on a bystander, Dorian Barton, during the June 26, 2010 demonstration, which took place few hundred metres south of the Ontario legislature.

During first trial of the case, Barton affirmed that he had only come to the protest due to curiosity but was brutally rammed hard with something having close proximity to a riot shield, after which he was again hammered five times by unknown people while photographing mounted police. A hospital worker present at the scene, Andrew Wallace, testified in the court that he witnessed Weddell emerging from a line of riot police and saw him cruelly hitting Barton with his shield and baton without provocation. Furthermore, Wallace also provided several photos and a couple of videos showing what happened to Barton, though they did not exactly portray the precise moment of Barton’s alleged assault hence it was difficult to find out the assaulter.

Weddell completely denied the allegations of using force against Barton, and alleged to have barely remembered his interactions with Barton since they were insignificant. Though after studying several images of the events, he claimed to have remembered that he helped Barton up from the pavement by his T-shirt and guided him clear of police lines.
