Liberal Party leader, Justin Trudeau, has once again highly condemned the Citizenship and Immigration Minister, Jason Kenney, for being “slow” in granting the citizenship to Canadian soldiers, and their other relatives, due to legal technicalities with the Citizenship Act. During his address on the Canadian Forces Day in Vancouver, Trudeau stated that “unfortunately, Minister Kenney has been slow to engage with situations like this on a case by case basis and I certainly regret that it still something that is still hanging over far too many families who do believe they served this country with distinction.”

The Citizenship and Immigration Minister, Jason Kenney, addressed a case last June in Burnaby, concerning a Canada-raised daughter of a Second World War veteran whose father was not a Canadian citizen at the time of the war, and the Citizenship Act did not legally exist until 1947. Hence, it was brought to light that several cases, including the born-abroad war bride children such as Scott, have been denied citizenship even though they were raised in Canada.  It was observed that several other existing legal technicalities have also caused for many “Lost Canadians” to remain without Canadian citizenship despite their strong roots in the country.

Even though plenty cases were resolved in 2009 by An Act to Amend the Citizenship Act, but since several second-generation born abroad Canadians did not qualify for citizenship under the amended Act, Canadians who were born outside Canada have encountered legal hurdles when adopting children from other countries as well.
