The Quebec Soccer Federation has announced to uphold its turban ban on the field, alleging that those who are not ready to play by the rules can “play in their backyards.” The executive-director of QSF, Brigitte Frot, mentioned in a statement that the organization has prioritized safety and will make no compromise of allowing turban-wearing boys. She added that her stance will remain the same, at least until she is ordered otherwise by FIFA, i.e. soccer’s international governing body.

Frot confessed that she has no clear guidelines of the safety issues related to turban or any injuries that might have involved turbans, but she advised that Sikh boys shall do the same as hijab-wearing Muslim girls did and take their case directly to FIFA. Almost four years ago, FIFA authorized a one-year experiment, allowing female players to wear hijabs. Frot stated that “FIFA made a trial period to make sure the equipment that is required for the girls is correct.” Frot confidently stated that the Quebec Soccer Federation will be glad to allow boys to wear turbans while playing football, in case FIFA rules that it is safe to do so. She adamantly mentioned that the federation won’t lobby FIFA to conduct a safety study.

Turbans and similar items usually worn by young Sikh kids, including the patka and keski, have been disallowed by the QSF since they were banned last year. A Sikh player with 11 years of experience, Aneel Samra, alleged that “all Sikh children in Quebec are confused. Everywhere in Canada you’re allowed to play but not in Quebec.”

  1. Let the chaps play. Here in England we have plenty of Sikhs playing football, I had the previlage to know many personally. I am shocked by silly decision in Quebec.
