British Prime Minister, David Cameron, have conveyed optimism regarding an in-the-making trade deal between Canada and the European Union, alleging that he believes both sides are close to an agreement. Speaking to a group of reporters on Wednesday, Mr. Cameron stated that “it seems to me we’re close,” adding that “it would be a pity if we can’t get it over the line. It’s important for both of us frankly. Britain and Canada are both trading nations. We should be demonstrating to the rest of the world that these bilateral trade agreements can drive growth.”

Mr. Cameron is expected to meet Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, on Thursday in the British House of Commons where trade discussions will be at the top of the agenda. Mr. Harper landed in London on Tuesday to attend various meetings before the G8 summit in Northern Ireland next week. Later, Mr. Harper is scheduled to visit Paris for attending several meetings with French President, François Hollande, and to Dublin on the weekend before going to the G8.

However, on the contrary, Mr. Harper did not show as much optimism regarding the several month long negotiations of the trade deal during an interaction with the press on Thursday. He told reporters that “these have been long discussions, they are continuing,” adding that “we have been making a lot of progress and they are the biggest trade negotiations Canada has ever had in its history.”
