Recent reports have confirmed that a Christian girl who was charged with alleged blasphemy in Pakistan has fled to Canada to seek refuge and safety. 14-year-old Rimsha Masih was charged with blasphemy in 2012 as she was accused of allegedly burning pages of the Qu’ran. Even though she was acquitted later, her family decided to move to Canada in light of continued danger and threats.

Peter Bhatti, owner of a Christian organization that has helped Masih’s family to settle in Canada, has confirmed that the family migrated to Canada in secret not more than a few weeks ago. Bhatti explained that Masih was accompanied by her parents, brother and sister as they left Pakistan in order to have safe, secure lives. Masih’s journey to Canada has put an end to a case that received substantial attention in the international media, especially when she was arrested in last August.

Masih’s neighbor had claimed to have seen her burning pages of the Qu’ran, after which Masih was indicted and forced to spend 25 days in an adult prison until she was freed on bail. The incident receives significant attention in the legislative assembly of Pakistan, as calls grew for reform of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws that has been used to target religious minorities and to settle personal scores. Police investigation has led to a speculation that Rimsha was framed by a cleric who himself desecrated the Qu’ran and later let accused the girl for his wrongdoings.
