The city officials have officially lifted the state of emergency in Calgary city that was announced almost two weeks ago in light of the massive damage caused by the flood. The announcement of lifting the state of emergency was made at exactly 10:16 a.m. local time on Thursday. However, several of Calgary’s municipal emergency plans will still remain in place until recovery and relief efforts are concluded in severely affected parts of the city.

As part of the announcement, the director of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency, Bruce Burrell, shared that “our work is now transitioning from city-wide emergency disaster response to localized recovery and relief efforts.” He also reiterated that Calgarians are insistently being warned to keep away from the Bow and Elbow rivers because they are still unsafe for recreational use. The preliminary cost of damages caused by last month’s floods has been estimated by the City officials to lie around $256.5 million.

It was announced that since the scope of recovery work is now being localized to address particular issues, up to three community support centers will be now shut down in the flood’s aftermath. The announcement mentioned that Bowness Community Association and Cliff Bungalow-Mission Community Association will be closed at noon July 4, while Elbow Park Tennis Club will be closed at noon July 5. At the end of announcement, Burrell stated that “we’d like to take this opportunity to thank all Calgarians for their outpouring of generosity these past two weeks and encourage everyone to continue helping those in need. Rebuilding our city starts with rebuilding our people.”
