The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees has made an announcement on Friday declaring that workers of eight extended care sites across the province, including two in Calgary, will be partake in a strike on Monday. The president of AUPE, Guy Smith, alleged that the union had served strike notice on Friday, informing that almost 1,200 employees at eight different privately-run facilities operated by Extendicare to walk off the job.

In another statement the president of AUPE, Guy Smith, added that “Extendicare cares more about its profits and bottom line than it does about providing quality care for its residents.” The primary issue or root cause of the strike action is the controversial reduction in the number of sick days allowed to workers, which have been lessened down to 14 from the current 120. The union’s negotiator, Kevin Davediuk, stated that “the majority of their people are part-time workers.” Davediuk added that “the AUPE represents licensed practical nurses, health care aides and support staff in the facilities. “A lot of them are working moms.”

Complaining about the issue, Smith argued that such a steep and abrupt reduction in the number of sick days will have a drastic affect as “it’s going to force workers to come into work sick.” He stressed that “that’s a very dangerous situation.” Smith highlighted that the eight facilities striking on Monday are all run by Extendicare under a contract with Alberta Health Services and are home to about 1,000 residents. He also added that “this falls at the feet of the government.”
