Reports have confirmed that the Scarborough subway extension is back on the discussion table. Toronto’s Mayor, Rob Ford, is scheduled to accompany city manager, Joe Pennachetti, in Etobicoke where they are anticipated to reveal a report into the feasibility of the project. Despite city council having previously approved the plan of building an LRT in Scarborough, TTC chair, Karen Stintz, confessed that there is a growing possibility that the east might end up getting a subway extension. Stintz mentioned that “if we can negotiate an arrangement with the province on funding, we can proceed as soon as we can get our environmental assessments done.”

The proposal suggests an extension running through the Kennedy Station all the way to McCowan and Sheppard. Councilor, Glenn De Baeremaeker, explained that the proposal has already been voted upon last May, as he explained that “that motion passed 35 to 9. I don’t think many votes are going to switch.” He added that “what I’m hoping we’ll do next week with the mayor’s support and hopefully an overwhelming support of council, is make sure that we, one, want a subway and two, we’re willing to pay for it.”

On the other hand, another councilor, Janet Davis, had a little more skeptic views as he alleged that “if there is a plan that is fully funded and that money is commited to on the table, signed, sealed, delivered, then we can have a realistic debate.” Meanwhile, Provincial transportation minister, Glen Murray, mentioned in a press statement that “over my dead body will people in Scarborough be left out of transit. I’m really not fussed about whether it’s a subway or an LRT.”
