The Grace Foundation, a charitable institute located in New Brunswick, was at center of political point scoring when it was leaked that Liberal leader Justin Trudeau acquired public-speaking fees for speaking at a fund eraser this past spring. The institute had previously demanded a refund of the fee, alleging that the incident was a disappointment, though it has now allegedly withdrawn the request while also distancing itself from several board members for allegedly leaking a “private” letter about the issue to the federal Conservatives.

The foundation that runs an 80-bed nursing home in Saint John, asserted that it was “deeply distressed” that the issue was transformed into a fodder for partisan attacks. Trudeau spokeswoman, Kate Monfette, informed reporters that Liberal leader’s office was in recent contact with the foundation chairman, Ian Webster, “and he informed us that they will not be requesting a reimbursement.” Monfette added that “they consider this matter closed.”

The leaked letter was addressed by the foundation’s board of directors to Speakers’ Spotlight in March, alleging that a June 2012 fundraiser for which it hired Trudeau was nothing but a “huge disappointment and financial loss,” hence it requested reimbursement of the $20,000 speaking fee. However, the board decided to give up the issue in May as it received no response. Trudeau claims to have recently offered repayment to the foundation in light of the letter’s circulation by the Prime Minister’s Office as part of a campaign criticizing Trudeau for taking money from charities.
