Winnipeg Police has confirmed to have found a dead body in the Red River, though they claim it’s too early to speculate its Lisa Gibson, i.e. the mother of two small children who died after being found injured in their home on Wednesday. The body was located from the river by the Alexander Docks, where police dive teams were already searching for 32-year-old Gibson.

Previously until Thursday, police was under the impression that Gibson was still alive, however their attention was diverted towards the Assiniboine River near the family’s home on Friday after the comprehensive searches of parks and the riverbank in the Westwood neighbourhood did not yield any positive result. Four members of the provincial kayaking team, who were paddling in canoe races, informed the authorities about a dead body seen in the Red River on Saturday morning. Team members speculated that the body appeared to be a woman. The Alexander Docks are situated a short distance downstream from where the Assiniboine and Red Rivers meet up.

Soon after the report of a possible dead body in the river, the area along Waterfront Drive was taped off by police officers. Consequently, tarp was installed to protect the scene from any prying eyes while the coroner examined the body and wheeled it away. Police spokesman Const., Eric Hofley, alleged that police were not able to confirm the gender of the body at the scene, so it’s highly unlikely to be confirmed until Saturday.
