A random and completely unprovoked attack on an innocent woman resulted in her immediate death, which the police are calling an “extreme case of gratuitous violence” in downtown Montreal. The incident took place at around 12:20 a.m. Monday on St. Laurent Blvd. near Ste. Catherine St., soon after a man was thrown out of a couple of strip clubs for aggressive behavior. Witnesses report that the suspect attempted to punch several pedestrians until he finally started beating a woman who was crossing the street. Witnesses narrate that the women immediately collapsed to the ground after which the man kept on hitting her in the head until he was stopped by intervention of a passersby.

Later authorities confirmed that the woman was quickly shifted to a nearby hospital for medical attention to multiple severe injuries though doctors failed to revive her and she passed away at around 4 a.m. Witnesses were extremely shocked at the randomness and meaningless nature of the attack. In words of Montreal police Const., Daniel Lacoursiere, “It had no meaning” because “the woman was crossing the street very peacefully and he went up to her, hit her and as she fell down just kept hitting her for no reason.”

Later officers took the 38-year-old suspect in custody, who reportedly has a bulky criminal record. Lacoursiere revealed that the earliest the suspect might appear in court would be Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, the crime scene remained closed for general traffic on Monday morning, while police continued gathering evidence and pursuing their investigation into the incident.
