So far there has been no attempt to reach a deal to circumvent the colossal job action of Canada’s diplomats, which is aimed at producing a massive backlog in Canadian visa applications by students, temporary workers and tourists from around the world. The job action has been undertaken by more than 150 Ottawa’s Foreign Service officers that have brought strike action to the 15 largest immigration processing centers, including Beijing, New Delhi, Mexico City and London, which will erupt in substantial delays for the would-be visitors and disruptions of their plans while Canada’s economy could take a multi-million-dollar hit.

The president of the Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers (PAFSO) and a key figure representing the strike action, Tim Edwards, pointed out that the productions of visas during job action will be reduced by tens of thousands in only week, though he claims that a small percentage of applications will still be finalized by other staff at the strikebound embassies. Meanwhile, he also assured that the union does not intend to hold up visas for those visiting Canada for humanitarian reasons.

Additionally, Edwards revealed that PAFSO has devised a plan of rotating strikes, which makes it impossible to portray how long the job action will last at the 15 largest immigration posts. Among the visa processing centres where immigration officers have walked out are Abu Dhabi, Ankara, Cairo, Chandigarh (India), Hong Kong, Manila, Moscow, Paris, Riyadh, Sao Paulo and Shanghai. Edwards stressed that there is no indication from Treasury Board President Tony Clement, who is handling the negotiations for the government, of a willingness to resume the bargaining that began in late 2011.

  1. If you want to see the dispute resolved, without harming people, add your voice on Gajantic….There’s already a Mission started.

Whether you are for or against the Canadian Foreign Service Staff or the Government of Canada as their employer, this strike is harming ordinary people around the world. People who have worked hard to pay deposits to Canadian colleges and universities. People who wanted to attend a wedding; people who won’t get to attend funerals; lots of regular people are getting hurt.

(Disclosure: I’m the founder of Gajantic…However, this issue is close to home for me personally — my close friend is one of the people caught in this dispute and is at risk of losing her spot at college and her deposit/tuition. Please don’t think my comment_content here is about corporate promotion – it’s not. I’m hoping for your help for my friend, and thousands like her.)
