The head of Toronto’s police union has claimed that the amateur video showing a Toronto police officer continually shooting at a teenager armed with a knife is “just one segment” of a broader picture that might seem different after the investigation of Ontario’s police watchdog is completed. The president of the Toronto Police Association, Mike McCormack, mentioned in a statement that “I can see why people would have questions, and that’s a natural thing, and we’re going to get the answers” from the investigation underway by the province’s Special Investigations Unit. Hence, he alleged that “let’s let the SIU do its work.”

The video showing the death of 18-year-old Sammy Yatim a little after midnight on Saturday received more than a million combined views on YouTube. Witnesses have reported that Yatim was alone in the 505 Dundas streetcar, near Trinity Bellwoods Park, at the time he was shot dead. Additionally, the witnesses reveal that Yatim pulled a knife and ordered everybody off the streetcar. Whereas, the video shows that he was hit with nine gunshots in 13 seconds along with a stun gun.

The unprofessional video of the incident recorded by a passerby has sparked outrage throughout the city. The incident is currently under investigation by the SIU, the police force itself, while it will also be reviewed today by the Ontario Ombudsman. Meanwhile, the police officer at center of the controversy has been placed on a paid suspension, while Toronto police Chief Bill Blair mentioned in a statement on Monday that he also wants answers as much as the public.
