Residents of two neighbourhoods in High River have finally acquired the acknowledgement they sought from High River officials, although the province still remains unmoved over its decision to not disperse any money to relocate them. A closed door meeting held on Friday night concluded in the town’s Emergency Operating Centre head, Darwin Durnie, confessing that the homes in Sunrise and Hampton Hills were a berm. He explained that the decision was made to save other homes from the flooding.

The affected residents claim to realize the reason behind the decision and shared consent, though they demand the province to take extra steps in order to provide special relief as their house stood in water for more than 20 days and are now largely irrecoverable. One such affected resident, Brian Crundwell, stated that “we’re all okay with that – berm us off if it’s going to save others and possibly some lives – but don’t act like we are not a special case.” Crundwell is a retired contractor who recently bought a home in the town and only spent one night in his dream retirement home after which it was overflowing with flood. He pointed out that “we invested heavily in this house, looking forward to our future. What’s it worth now? I can’t tell you, but certainly a lot less that it was on June 19.”

Many others including Crundwell are demanding the province to buy their properties and allow them to relocate their assets somewhere else. Whereas, the province claims that the neighbourhoods aren’t considered inside the floodway so things are different in terms of compensation.
