While the Canadian government anxiously waits for a binding approval for the Keystone XL, U.S. President Barack Obama has expressed serious concerns over the fingers showing the number of jobs created by the project in the U.S. During an interview with the New York Times on Saturday, Obama allegedly annulled the estimates presented by the Republicans, stating that the $7.6-billion TransCanada Corp. cross-border pipeline project will not generate such significant job growth in the U.S.

President Obama pointed out that “Republicans have said that this would be a big jobs generator,” highlighting that “there is no evidence that that’s true.” Commenting further on the matter, Obama stated that “the most realistic estimates are this might create maybe 2,000 jobs during the construction of the pipeline, which might take a year or two. And then after that, we’re talking about somewhere between 50 and 100 jobs in an economy of 150 million working people.” Apart from that, Obama also highlighted that fulfillment of 2,000 initial jobs is a “blip relative to the need.”

The numbers calculated by the president of United Sates are quite in contrast to the ones previously calculated by the advocates of the project. The ruling Conservative government has already mentioned it at numerous occasions that the pipeline aimed at transporting millions of barrels of oilsands bitumen a week from Alberta to Texas refineries is in the national interest of both U.S. and Canada, particularly in terms of jobs creation and increased government revenue.
