Family and friends of the boys who passed away after a large snake escaped from its enclosure above an exotic pet store in Campbellton, N.B., have organized a public vigil to honor the departed tonight. It was confirmed by the police department that the large African rock python caused the deaths of 4-year-old Noah Barthe and 6-year-old Connor Barthe, and reported to have launched a criminal investigation into their deaths.
Authorities have ordered an autopsy report on both bodies to be performed on Tuesday in order to determine the exact cause of the two boys’ deaths. According to a statement issued by RCMP Sgt. Alain Tremblay on Tuesday, it was disclosed that the date of receiving result of autopsies is not decisive, though he expressed optimism that they would help clarify the reasons that lead to the death of both young boys. Meanwhile, the snake has been put down and sent to Fredericton for a necropsy.
It is disclosed that the African rock python was found out of its enclosure and in the living room of an apartment above the reptile store and near the boys on Monday morning by owner Jean-Claude Savoie. Police sources confirmed on Tuesday that, in contrary to initial reports, the snake was in fact not kept in the store but was contained upstairs. Investigators suspect that the animal managed to escape through the top of a glass enclosure and into a ventilation system, from where the 4.3 metres long and weighed about 45 kilograms python fell down from ceiling and into the room where the two boys were sleeping.
