Amid preparations of a mega protest rally by Toronto residents on Tuesday against the sticking issue of 18-year-old Sammy Yatim’s police shooting, the province’s largest labour federation has made an announcement to conduct a pre-rally news conference along with families of victims of police violence in order to spur more support. The protest rally is co-organized by the Ontario Federation of Labour and the Urban Alliance on Race Relations and is scheduled to take place almost two weeks after police fatally shot Mr. Yatim.

The news of police firing nine gunshots at an 18-year-old, who pull out a knife on a streetcar, sparked immense public outcry that lead to the provincial ombudsman’s investigation into police use of force. However, the executive vice-president of OFL, Irwin Nanda, stated that “decades of inquest reports and recommendations are gathering dust on shelves while the bodies of victims are piling up. The ombudsman investigation is a vital step, but the province must go further.” Consequently, he laid out the demand calling for an “independent investigation” into police training, policies and practices throughout the chain of command.

The news conference, scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the office of the Urban Alliance on Race Relations on Carlton Street, will include family members of several high-profile police shootings, including of Mr. Yatim, Sylvia Klibingaitis, Levi Schaeffer and others. Soon after that, community members have planned to convene at Yonge-Dundas Square and then march to the Toronto Police Services Board on College Street to “demand justice” for Mr. Yatim.
