The suspect arrested and charged in connection with the shooting and firing incident at the Metropolis nightclub when Premier Pauline Marois was giving her victory speech, Richard Henry Bain, has recently informed court that he is $60,000 in debt and can’t afford a lawyer. Consequently, Bain asked judge to make Quebec taxpayers fund his legal defense. Bain asserted that he wants the Crown to release his truck, which he wanted to sell, and alleged that it contained $10,000 worth of jewelry inside the vehicle. He added that “I am not a lawyer and I want a fair trial.”

Superior Court Justice, Marc David, gave Bain until Nov. 4 to find a lawyer, after which he would fix a trial date. Bain is facing 15 different charges, including first-degree murder, and has already decided to give up his right to a preliminary hearing, meaning his case will go straight to trial.

In response to Bain informing David that legal aid won’t represent him and he is having trouble finding counsel, David asserted that “it is not my duty or role to find you counsel.” He told Bain that he could file a request asking the state to pay for his fees while suggesting him to hire a lawyer to help him fill out the application. On the night of the shooting, Denis Blanchette was killed and his co-worker, David Courage, was seriously injured when a gunman opened fire while Marois was speaking.
