Southwest Division detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying five suspects in connection with two violent assaults early this morning (July 28, 2010).

“At this time there’s no evidence to suggest the two assaults are directly related, but we are still investigating this,” says Acting Det. Mike Wasylyshen.

In the first assault, at approximately 2:45 a.m., two males noticed they were being followed by a group of men at 107 Street and Whyte Avenue, on the north side of the avenue. Shortly after this, the group of three suspects began running after the two men. One of the complainants was then assaulted with a pipe-like object and sustained serious injuries to his head and face. It appears that the suspects and complainants do not know each other, but officers believe the group of men got into an altercation earlier that same morning.

Police are looking for three male suspects described as Caucasian, wearing dark clothing. One of the suspects, who was in possession of the pipe like object, is described as 5’8” tall, with very short hair or possibly a shaved head. The other two suspects are described as being between 5’11” and 6’ tall.

The second assault occurred at 3:05 a.m. at the southwest corner of Calgary Trail and Whyte Avenue. After a verbal confrontation with a group of people on the corner of the sidewalk, two male suspects exited a black vehicle and two younger males on the sidewalk were assaulted with a pipe-like object. Both complainants suffered serious head injuries but only one of them was admitted to hospital. Initial investigations show that the complainants and suspects do not know each other.

Police are looking for two Caucasian males with tanned-looking skin, both 5’8” tall, wearing dark clothing. A female was operating the vehicle, which has been identified by investigators, and there was another male passenger in the vehicle.

Police are in the process of reviewing video surveillance that may have recorded the incidents.
