Police has reported an unusual accident of a Mazda SUV and two horses on Highway 104 early Saturday morning that resulted in the death of both horses and injuries to two men. It was explained that the SUV was travelling eastbound near Masstown at about 5:45 a.m. when it crashed into a large black horse and a miniature horse that were running loose in the area.

Consequently, the vehicle veered off the road and into the ditch, where it soon caught fire. Though the driver was initially trapped inside, two passing motorists saw the incident and rescued the man before the SUV exploded in flames. Const. Dal Hutchinson of the Colchester County RCMP stated that the driver is incredibly lucky. He alleged that “it’s very, very fortunate that we had a couple motorists stop and pull the driver out of the vehicle because it was within seconds — they were pulling him up onto the shoulder of the highway — when the vehicle exploded. It could have been a different outcome.”

Const. Hutchinson revealed that he suffered some serious injuries and was shifted to the Colchester Regional Hospital, along with a male passenger. On the other hand, both horses died instantly due to the impact of the crash, while the third horse on the loose was retrieved by its owner. The Colchester County District RCMP, the RCMP northern traffic services, the provincial transportation department and crews from the Onslow Belmont fire department were on the scene. A traffic analyst is investigating the crash.
