On Tuesday, Aug. 10 at approximately 3:40 p.m., the EPS Southeast Special Project Team stopped a vehicle – that had been reported stolen – in the area of 70 St. and 82 Ave.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of an apparent live improvised explosive device (IED) in the rear of the car. EPS Explosive Disposal Unit members were immediately called to the scene. The robot was used to neutralize the device; it was then officially rendered safe by specialized technicians.

A second similar device was also located on one of the suspects from the vehicle. It was safely secured manually by the EPS technicians. At this time it is not known who made the IEDs or what they were to be used for. The incident is still under investigation.

Elrond SMITH (39) has been charged with possession of stolen property, possession for the purpose of traffiking, possession of explosives, possession of prohibited firearms, possession of restricted weapon, possession of explosive device, breach of conditions not to possess ammo/explosives and for driving an uninsured motor vehicle. Heath SLITER (35) was arrested on outstanding warrants.
