Library and Archives Canada are now hunting for their new boss, i.e. Canada’s top librarian, who is assured to be paid between $192,600 and $226,500 a year. A recent job posting was listed to replace the institutions former and highly controversial head, Daniel Caron, who resigned from the post in May in light of inappropriate spending allegations. At the time when Caron took on the job, i.e. 2009, his starting salary was between $180,800 and $212,700.

Mr. Caron, an economist and career bureaucrat, was found to have billed taxpayers for more than $170,000 in a period of only two years in lieu of various travel costs and other expenses including meals in fancy restaurants, stays in expensive hotels and personal Spanish lessons at a cost of almost $4,500. Even worse was the timing of these expenses, as they were billed around the time when Library and Archives Canada was coping with $10 million in budget cuts, which caused numerous layoffs and the elimination of programs including the National Archival Development Program.

Following Mr. Caron’s resignation, representatives from Canada’s archivist and librarian associations convened in Ottawa to deliberate on the future of Library and Archives Canada. It was unanimously agreed that any replacement to Mr. Caron shall be an archivist or librarian. An archivist, Nancy Marrelli, explained at the time in May, that “we have the professional knowledge of what the job requires.” The Canadian Council of Archives then sent a comprehensive list of qualities that Canada’s next librarian and archivist should have in a three-page document stressing that the successful applicant should have expertise in libraries, archives and documentary heritage.
