Yuk-Ying Chu of Markham charged with careless driving

The York Regional Police Collision Reconstruction Unit has concluded their investigation and laid a charge in connection with a fatal motor vehicle collision which occurred at the intersection of 16th Avenue and Rodick Road in the Town of Markham.

On Friday, August 6, 2010, the driver of a Toyota Sienna was charged with Careless Driving under the Highway Traffic Act in connection with a collision with a pedestrian and his bicycle that occurred more than two weeks ago.

On Monday, July 26, 2010, at approximately 10 p.m., a 66-year-old pedestrian from Markham was walking his bicycle through the intersection south on Rodick Road. At the same time a 53-year-old Markham woman was operating her Toyota Sienna northbound on Rodick Road. The Toyota made a left hand turn to go westbound on 16th Avenue when the pedestrian and his bicycle were struck.

The pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision and was transported to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the Toyota Sienna was not injured as a result of the collision.

• Yuk-Ying CHU, 53, of Markham

CHARGES:

• Careless Driving – Highway Traffic Act

Ms. CHU is scheduled to appear before the Provincial Offences Justice Court in Newmarket on Monday, September 27, 2010.
