Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, made an official announcement on Sunday, revealing his government’s plan to conduct four federal byelections in Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec on Nov. 25. Candidates in all ridings have already been preparing for elections since the summer, while majority attention of each party is focused on Toronto Centre and Montreal’s Bourassa riding, where spectators expect a close fight between the Liberal and NDP candidates.

The upcoming byelections are going to be the first time that new faces of both parties, i.e. Justin Trudeau and Thomas Mulcair, are anticipated lead the competition. A political scientist, Chris Cochrane, analyzed that “there’s a battle right now for the political left in the country between the Liberal party and the New Democrats.” He added that “any signals that the Liberals send out at this point of losing ground to the New Democrats or not making ground up would be a very negative one.”

Toronto Centre was previously held by former interim Liberal Leader, Bob Rae, who recently gave up the position in July. Now two star journalists are anticipated to have a fierce competition in the strategically important riding. Liberal candidate, Chrystia Freeland, is a former deputy editor at the Globe and Mail and co-chair of the Liberal’s new economic advisory board, whereas the NDP candidate, Linda McQuaig, is a former Toronto Star columnist too. On the other hand, Liberal candidate Emmanuel Dubourg, who used to be a Quebec MNA, and NDP candidate Stephane Moraille, an entertainment lawyer, are anticipated to compete in Montreal-Bourassa riding.
