Organizers have scheduled a vigil to remember the homeless man, on Saturday evening, who passed away after being consumed in a fire inside a Nova Scotia bus shelter. The RCMP has taken up the case and initiated an investigation into the death. According to event organizers, an estimated audience of 1,000 people is expected to show up at the candlelight vigil remembering Harley Lawrence in the rural community of Berwick, N.S.

Police sources have alleged Lawrence’s death to be a “suspicious” incident, as investigators await complete report from an autopsy that took place on Thursday. 62-year-old Lawrence was allegedly sleeping in a bus shelter on early Wednesday morning at the time when the fire started, which the RCMP has yet to determine was accidental or not. In a separately issued statement, Berwick Mayor Don Clarke informed the Canadian Press that a number of residents in the community of 2,500 were unhappy when Lawrence arrived in the town almost six months ago. Clarke revealed that he received a number of phone calls from residents complaining about his presence and asking for ways to get rid of him.

According to nearby residents, the bus shelter has become more like a memorial location, with flowers being laid at the site daily, since Lawrence’s death. It was explained that “everybody in the town knew who he was, they’d see him on their daily commute so he became a staple in the community in the last six months.”
