RCMP has announced in a latest statement that the investigation into the cause of a recent rural school bus crash may take up to a week. The Crossfield-bound school bus carrying nine elementary and junior high students unfortunately collided with a work truck at a rural intersection north of Calgary on Friday morning. Regrettably, the bus driver’s own five-year-old son was the most seriously victimized student to suffer critical injuries. He was flown to Alberta Children’s Hospital by STARS with critical, life-threatening injuries.
On the other hand, three of the nine children injured remain in critical condition. According to RCMP Const. Robert Frizzell, the bus was travelling westbound and past a stop sign at the time when it collided with an Ford F-350 truck heading south on Highway 791 at Township Road 290. A parent of one of the injured children revealed that the bus driver held a safety drill, about what to do in an emergency situation, only few days prior to the crash.
Friends of the families affected have collectively organized to prepare meals in a show of support. Crossfield’s Mayor, Nathan Anderson, mentioned in a statement that “I am very concerned. Our prayers go out to those kids and families,” adding that “we just hope, God willing, they are all OK and will pull out of this without any lasting effects.” It was later revealed that the bus had only made a few stops, due to which it was even less than half full with students headed to Crossfield Elementary and W.G. Murdoch School at around 8 a.m.
