The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was called on the weekend after a man was apprehended following a disturbance on a Whitby street.

On Saturday August 14, 2010 at approximately 11:40 p.m. police were called to the intersection of Lady May Drive and Scepter Place in Whitby regarding an armed person. Witnesses reported a 36-year-old Whitby male was walking around the neighbourhood armed with a baseball bat and he was yelling. Citizens on the street engaged the man and the baseball bat was retrieved.

Officers arrived and found the male laying on the street. They called for an ambulance and moved the male to a nearby boulevard when the male lost vital signs. Attempts to revive him failed.

As the death occurred while police were on scene, the SIU was called as required by provincial legislation. The body was later transported to the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto for a post mortem examination to determine cause of death.
