It is no secret that Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has numerously admitted that he sometimes “gets hammered,” and a recently confessed having had smoked crack while in a drunken stupor did not go unnoticed as well, that altogether with the latest incriminatory video in which the Mayor threatens to kill someone in an inebriated, obscenity-laced rant, are all traits of substance abuse which the Mayor is persistently choosing to deny and ignore.
According to addiction experts, all of the factors including denial, minimizing and other behaviours, are common traits among those with alcohol or drug dependencies. Co-founder and executive director of Breakaway Addictions treatment services in Toronto, Dennis Long, stated during an interview that “what we’re seeing in the current situation with Mayor Ford is clearly a case of denial.” He alleged that addicts to alcohol or drugs engage in denial, but several do go to extraordinary lengths to avoid consequences of their actions. He alleged that such situation could arise even in the face of concrete evidence of serious problems that jeopardize their personal and work lives.
Talking about Mayor Ford, Mr. Long “he’s just digging in his heels and saying ‘Nope, nope, nope, and that kind of behaviour’s not that uncommon.” He explained in a general context that “people will lie and they will frequently try to minimize their behaviour, particularly if they’re in a situation where somebody’s judging their behaviour in a very clear way.” Hence it was concluded that “so when confronted with that judgmental approach, which is very clearly happening here, a lot of people circle the wagons and say, ‘OK, really it’s not a problem.’ And in almost every case it is.”
