Gusty, snowy weather has resulted in complete havoc on all city roads and highways surrounding Calgary. An almost 30-vehicle pileup resulted near Crossfield on QE2, which was caused by a semi-truck skidding this morning, while another crash closed lanes to travel. On the other hand, police confirms that at least 160 crashes spurred within Calgary until 11 a.m., nine of which involved minor injuries.

RCMP has been actively removing stranded motorists from the highway as they are expected to update the situation shortly. RCMP has already issued a warning to motorists for avoiding highway travel, at least until the blowing snow is making visibility considerably difficult. The blowing snow began early this morning in Calgary and it is expected to continue for most of the day. Apart from that, Environment Canada has also issued a snowfall warning, prompted by its calculations which predict up to 10 to 15 centimetres snow fall today. In addition to that, strong north to northeast winds are also anticipated, which are expected to further restrict visibility. Thus, the temperature is expected stoop as low as -11C this afternoon.

In light of white-out conditions caused by blowing snow, the RCMP has asked all drivers to avoid travelling on Highway 1 east of Calgary all the way to Brooks and Highway 2 northbound and southbound from Calgary all the way to Edmonton. Whereas, a winter storm warning has also been issued for Red Deer and Drumheller areas as snow and blowing snow are expected with visibilities frequently below 1 kilometre.
