Finally concluding the judgment of a case started in January, Justice David McComb announced the verdict on Tuesday declaring that Anesthesiologist Dr. George Doodnaught is  guilty of 21 counts of sexual assault on female patients during surgeries. Before announcing the verdict, even the judge admitted that “this has been a long, hard, emotional trial.”

Almost 65-years-old Doodnaught had been practicing for 26 years and was since known and respected as anesthesiologist, entrusted with the task of sedating patients planned for surgeries like hysterectomies and hip and knee replacements at North York General Hospital. Court found that Doodnaught would often place his patients in a state of “conscious sedation,” often termed as a twilight state, which can be thought of as a state hovering between consciousness and unconsciousness. The anesthesiologist was found guilty of taking advantage of his position in the operating room between 2006 and 2010, when he concealed behind a sterile screen that separates patients’ upper and lower bodies. It was found that while hiding from the other operating room staff, Doodnaught fondled with breasts of sedated female patients, kissing their mouths and forcing them to perform oral sex.

Court was told that almost all his victims ranged in age from 25 to 75. Whereas, Crown alleged that each time he improved “surgical precision” and polished over his decades of experience. During the time from 2006 to 2010, Crown alleged claims that five complaints were addressed to the hospital though it only action two weeks after Doodnaught was arrested in 2010 on three counts of sexual assault.
