The Senate committee that reviewed Mike Duffy’s controversial ineligible expense claims, which are also now the subject of an RCMP investigation, has planned to meet with three Deloitte auditors this morning and are anticipated to inquire about any potential interference faced in their audit. However, two of the main players in the controversy will not be allowed.

Several allegations surfaced in RCMP documents revealed last Wednesday, which suggested that Conservative Senator Irving Gerstein attempted to manipulate the Duffy audit by making a direct call to a partner at Deloitte named Michael Runia. Consequently, it was not a surprise that both Gerstein and Runia were not invited to Thursday’s internal economy committee meeting, since it was being held to investigate their involvement in the audit. Assuring that Runia will not be present in Wednesday’s meeting, Deloitte senior manager Vital Adam alleged that “the people from Deloitte who are appearing tomorrow at the Senate hearing are the ones who were invited.”

Commenting on the situation, Conservative Senator and chair of the committee, Gerald Comeau, stated that the committee is striving to know more about any possible interference that took place during the auditing process, and inquire if there was any, who did it and what was the nature of the interference. RCMP documents say that though the audit went ahead as planned, Conservative senators on the internal economy committee changed a report prepared by Senate staff to soften the language and entirely remove criticism of Duffy for his spending. A spokeswoman for Deloitte said the review “was conducted by a team of highly professional and objective forensic accountants.”
