26-year-old Jamie McDonald, from Gloucester, U.K., was running across Canada dressed as the comic book character, The Flash, for charity until he was beaten up in Alberta a short while after the New Year celebrations. McDonald’s spokesperson, Rich Leigh, confirmed that he was attacked a short while after midnight on Tuesday in Banff, Alta. Leigh explained that McDonald was later left without his bag, which contained credit cards and footage of his nine-month journey. The reports of the incidents are still unclear if the bag was taken during the incident or afterwards.

The story has made headlines across British media, as it is being followed by several mainstream outlets like the BBC and the Independent. McDonald was running across the country to make money for the Hospital for Sick Children and two British hospitals. Leigh confirmed that McDonald is not seriously hurt but she alleged that “he said he was more shaken up than anything.” Mr. McDonald has also confirmed the details of the incident personally through Twitter updates.

McDonald started his journey in March in St. John’s, N.L., from where he has been using a stroller to carry essentials like water, a tarp and an iPhone. Mr. McDonald was hospitalized for most of his childhood due to syringomyelia, however later exercise diminished his symptoms and now he hopes to inspire children through his run. During an interview in July, McDonald alleged that “I chose Canada because I heard it was the best country in the world.”
