Montreal police has straightforwardly labeled a recent interaction of an officer with a homeless man as “unacceptable” and “unexplainable,” when the officer threatened to tie the man to a pole. Head of public affairs for Montreal Police, Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere, assured that a disciplinary action will soon be taken for correction of the officer. He mentioned on Friday that “this is completely unacceptable, this is unexplainable and we’re sad,” while adding that “this is not what we expect from our police officers and there’s a reason why, as soon as we got the video, we said loud and clear this is unacceptable.”

In addition to that, Montreal’s newly-elected mayor, Denis Coderre, also criticized the officer’s actions, alleging that such incidents highlight the need of attention towards mental health issues. Mr. Coderre mentioned that “when we talk about mental illness, it is a complex issue.” It was explained that “we’re not all experts, so we have to surround ourselves making sure we’re going the appropriate way.”

The video shows the officer yelling at the apparently homeless man, as he said that “I’ve told you that if I receive another 911 call about you, I will tie you to a pole for an hour.” Additionally, the officer warns that “I swear — look into my eyes — I swear, I’ll tie you to a pole for an hour.” A short while after that, the camera operator Adis Simidzija steps in and tells the officer that “those are threats you are not allowed to make, sir.”
