Nova Scotia has all hands on deck for Saturday, as the blizzard which engulfed entire province rested on Friday. According to the statistics provided by Environment Canada, Halifax received almost 23 centimetres of snow, while Yarmouth received about 14 centimetres and Greenwood an estimate of 22 centimetres.

The city’s acting superintendent of winter works, Darrin Natolino, boasted in a statement that almost 90 per cent of municipal roads have been cleared by early Saturday afternoon, and the crews will be working throughout Saturday night to complete the rest. Nearly 200 plows were deployed during the peak hours of the storm, which distributed salt and then sand as the temperature dropped. Natolino explained that “salt, really, once we start getting down into colder temperatures like this, doesn’t really do an awful lot for us … because the salt doesn’t have time to activate and actually bare the surface up.”  It was added that “we’re actually piling it back off before it has time to do anything for us. So at times like that, we make the operational decision to switch to sand, which is an abrasive and gives us traction on the roadway.”

Even though the chilly effect remained on Saturday afternoon, as Halifax is predicted to have temperate around -21 C, it is anticipated to rise later on to 0 C by Sunday and 8 C on Monday. Hence, Natolino elucidated that as the temperature rises, roads might get a little slick, “so, we’re going to stay out there in full force and keep applying sand and salt as needed.”
