Appearing almost an hour later at a previously scheduled speech on late Thursday afternoon, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford complained that he was stuck in an elevator. Mayor Ford began his speech by thanking the Economic Club of Canada for inviting him, and for “getting me stuck in an elevator for 45 minutes.”

Economic Club of Canada had promoted its launch event to feature an appearance by Mr. Ford on Friday afternoon. The luncheon started at 11:45, whereas the mayor was scheduled to address the guests at the event at around noon. However, the mayor failed to show up till 1:00 pm, and there was no indication about how soon the mayor will reach. Consequently, some guests who even paid to see the mayor speak eventually gave up and left. One of the guests who waited for almost over an hour, Daniel Torchia, mentioned that “it’s unacceptable.” He revealed to have paid $89 dollars in order to hear the mayor speak, and alleged that “it requires communication and an explanation.”

Consequently, the event organizers made an announcement at about 12:50 p.m. and apologized for the delay, asserting that “our guest is on the way.” However, the lunch was served to all participants, totaling up to 180 guests, since they had had been eating only bread. One of those guests who left, Tony Wong, alleged that “I have a lot of work to do as well. So I have to go.”
