A Toronto city councilor, David Shiner, recently spoke against a clue on the game show “Jeopardy!” that referred to Mayor Rob Ford, and called it an “inappropriate” move by the family program. Shiner mentioned that the clue provided on Thursday night’s “Jeopardy!” challenge on the subject of the mayor’s drug admittance should have not been made part of the show.

The councilor mentioned on Friday that “to have issues or questions up on ‘Jeopardy!’, I don’t think it’s right talking about crack, scandals and drinking of a mayor in the city of Toronto,” and added that “that’s an inappropriate question for the show itself to put up.” Shiner also grieved that Toronto is being discussed in such negative context, as he alleged that “it’s unfortunate that that’s what we are being thought of around the world now.”

During  the show’s episode that aired on Thursday, host Alex Trebek delivered the following clue under the “scandal” category: “In 2013 Rob Ford, mayor of this 4th-largest city in N. America said he smoked weed, no crack…then yes, ok, crack, too.” The contestant, Chip, immediately gave the correct answer to win the $800 question, “what is Toronto?” The questioned was aimed at Mayor Ford’s admission last year, when he confessed having had smoked crack cocaine in “probably in one of my drunken stupors.” Trebek alleged that “yes, that’s the city,” before moving onto the next question. However, the question elicited mixed reaction on Twitter, though commonly Canadians felt hurt that the controversial mayor has made the Ontario capital infamous.

  1. So if the question was inappropriate that must make Ford’s behaviour OK with Shiner. The question is a consequence of Ford’s admitted behaviour. No allegations. Just facts. But somehow Trebek and the show are responsible.
Time for Shiner to hang up his skates and do something else. We don’t need any more Ford defenders on City Council.
