Authorities confirmed on Saturday that there is very little or no chance that the remaining 24 missing persons from the Résidence du Havre fire might be alive. While making the announcement, Sûreté du Québec, Lt. Guy Lapointe mentioned that “I think we can all agree here today that the 24 people who are still missing, I think we can assume the worst.” He explained that “it very improbable that there is a positive result for the 24 people we have yet to find. But you have to understand we’re not going to confirm any deaths until we’ve actually recovered the remains.”

Providing an update on the results of Thursday’s blaze in the 52-room residence, Lapointe revealed that police now believes that a total of 32 persons are missing, whereas eight are confirmed dead. It was explained that the figure of 32 is an increment from the initial estimate of 30 police originally made public. It was added that all 32 victims were confirmed residents of the building, while another statement suppressed some of the rumours swirling around the small city of 1,400.

Lapointe downplayed reports alleging that the fire was sparked by a resident smoking in their apartment. According to several media reports, nightwatchman, Bruno Belanger, claims that a resident who wanted to smoke but was not allowed to go outside, and so the resident lit up in his apartment. However, Lapointe alleged that “it’s one hypothesis among many,” and that “news reports and police investigations are two different things.”
