District 4 RCMP responded to a 9-1-1 call of a swimmer in distress in the Northumberland Strait at approximately 4:18pm on Friday September 10, 2010 at Bas Cape Pele, N.B.
RCMP, firefighters, as well as people at the scene attempted to assist the 22 year old man from Dieppe but were unable to rescue him due to severe water and weather conditions. The man is presumed drowned.

A search of the water and shoreline will continue once weather conditions permit.

The name of the man is not being released at this time.
