81-year-old man dies after being hit by TTC streetcar in Toronto

On Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at 10:55 a.m., police responded to a call for a personal injury collision on Spadina Avenue, north of Sullivan Street.

It was reported that:

– an 81-year-old man was standing on the east streetcar platform, located northbound on Spadina Avenue, north of Sullivan Street,

– the man stepped on to the roadway without checking northbound traffic and continued crossing mid-block, across the path of an approaching northbound TTC streetcar,

– the driver of the TTC streetcar, a 35-year-old man, sounded the warning bell while attempting to stop the vehicle,

– the TTC streetcar struck the man, knocking him to the ground where he sustained life-threatening head injuries.

The man was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
