The 22-year-old recently charged with premeditated murder of his own father and his longtime partner, Guillaume Gélinas, was represented by lawyer Jonathan Meunier in his brief court appearance today. Meunier mentioned in the start that he needs to evaluate the evidence before deciding how to proceed the case and prepare a defense.

Gélinas seemed pretty calm and comfortable when he arrived at the Joliette courthouse and stood in the prisoners dock for the first time before a Quebec Court judge. Mr. Meunier requested the court not to read the first-degree murder charges for the brief hearing, while also asking the court to bring Gélinas back at the courthouse again on March 6 for another court date that is expected to be only a formality. Gélinas is facing first-degree murder charges in the deaths of his father, 54-year-old Luc Gélinas, and his 35-year-old partner, Julie Lemieux, both of whom were executives with the Société des Alcools. Investigators claim that the crime was committed while both victims were in their home in Terrebonne on Thursday.

The arrest warrant issued to bring Gélinas in custody on Friday also listed that he lived in the same residence at the time of killings. Whereas, according to Gélinas’s Facebook page he lives in Gatineau and that’s where he was arrested, several hours after the bodies of both victims were found. Upon inquiry from the court if he intends to seek a mental health evaluation for his client, Meunier replied that he is still receiving police evidence and will not be able to decide before having a chance to evaluate it.
