The anti-government protesters currently seeking refuge in the Canadian embassy in Ukraine’s capital are still in inside even though the mission is sealed and staff moved to an undisclosed location to carry out their work more safely. According to the spokesman for Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, Adam Hodge, the government is counting on the situation to progress quickly so the demonstrators can vacate the premises as soon as possible. He alleged that “we expect these individuals to be able to leave the Embassy safely, free from intimidation, arrest or further harassment.”

The protesters breached the Kiev mission’s reception area on Tuesday amid bloody clashes with police in nearby Independence Square, which has been the centre of the uprising against President Viktor Yanukovych for months. According to another press statement issued by Mr. Baird on late Tuesday evening, he explained that the embassy staff are safe and accounted for, working from a temporary post so they can continue to deliver emergency services and distribute the aid money. However, government is obviously not disclosing any information on security specifics as to where, exactly, the staff are currently located.

Meanwhile, medical assistance, allocated through the government’s Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, is still being channeled to a Ukrainian charity organization Ottawa, i.e. International Renaissance Foundation, which is tasked to help in providing relief to activists. According to IRF’s website, “[the foundation’s] main objective is to provide financial and operational assistance to the development of an open and democratic society in Ukraine by supporting key civic initiatives in this area.”
