A 58-year-old male in police custody has died suddenly while attending provincial court in Oshawa.

On Friday, September 17, 2010 at approximately 9:15 a.m., the male arrived at the new provincial courthouse at 150 Bond Street East in Oshawa from the Lindsay jail in a prisoner transport van. He exited the van into a secure area with several other prisoners and was waiting to be processed for a pending court appearance, when he suddenly collapsed. The victim was transported by EMS personnel to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The sudden death investigation is now under the direction of the Office of the Coroner. The determination to the cause of death is ongoing and an autopsy is scheduled. The name of the male is withheld subject to notification of next of kin.
