Several sources have confirmed that investigators looking into the murder of Loretta Saunders, the missing student of Saint Mary’s University in Halifax whose body was discovered along a New Brunswick highway last week, have found new information related to the case. 26-year-old Inuk woman from Labrador, Saunders, was reported missing on Feb. 17.
According to Chronicle Herald, the investigators have found that Saunders’ body was kept in a hockey bag, and they also have a security video of two people carrying a hockey bag out of an apartment building on Cowie Hill Road in Halifax, where police allege Saunders was killed on Feb. 13. The two prime suspects charged with first-degree murder, 28-year-old Victoria Lea Henneberry and 25-year-old Blake Leggette, are set to return to Halifax provincial court on March 19 for their preliminary inquiry. Currently, Henneberry and Leggette are held at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth, where they are not allowed to communicate with each other without legal counsel.
Police have refused to confirm or deny the new findings, as the spokesman for Halifax Regional Police, Const. Pierre Bourdages, mentioned in an emailed statement issued on Thursday that the homicide investigation is still underway and he would not be able to say anything at this time. On the other hand, a source close to the Saunders family and in touch with their relatives confirmed on Friday that they are aware of the new details.
