Police has confirmed the news about the death of a 10-year old girl who was mauled by dogs in Lac Brochet First Nation in northern Manitoba. According to the police, the circumstances surrounding her death were not immediately available. In a press release, Thompson RCMP revealed to have responded to a call around 6 p.m. Tuesday, which reported about a child being mauled by two dogs in Lac Brochet.

The police statement issued late Wednesday afternoon explained that the 10-year-old girl from Lac Brochet was rushed to the local nursing station, where she was pronounced dead after a short while. On the other hands, community members destroyed the two large dogs, who were of unknown breed, immediately after the attack. The RCMP confirmed that the dogs belonged to a community member, however the girl wasn’t familiar with them.

This is the second such death this winter. Previously, seven-year-old Gracie Herntier-Clark was pronounced dead at Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg after being attacked by two Alaskan malamutes named Bear and Shadow on Mar. 16. At the time, Gracie was visiting family friends and playing outside near Oakbank when the dogs attacked her. According to RCMP, she had adult supervision but they might have left her alone with the animals for just a minute or two. No charges were laid in that death. Statistically, deadly dog attacks are rare in Canada on an average of about one per year. The vast majority happen in remote northern locales and involve sled-dog breeds.
