Quebec Liberals are being investigated for allegations of illegal fundraising on the very day that 70 of its candidates are being sworn in as MNAs. The province’s anti-corruption unit claims that the director of Power Corporation and the majority shareholder of a company called Shockbeton, Marc Bibeau, is the primary suspect in these allegations. Investigators also claim that he’s the Liberal Party’s leading fundraiser.

Previously, UPAC has raided Bibeau’s offices in November, when they claimed to be looking for evidence to support a speculation that he arranged illicit fundraising activities with Lino Zambito to benefit former deputy premier, Nathalie Normandeau. Furthermore, Bibeau is also alleged to have dealt with a former Liberal minister, Violette Trepanier, who was recently removed from the position of the director of fundraising for the party in March. Investigators inquired witnesses who have claimed that Bibeau was responsible for collecting illegal political funds from big businesses.

According to a search warrant submitted in court, investigators claim that “Bibeau was a political strategist, who kept an eye on donations from large companies.” It was alleged that Bibeau and Trepanier would then place the illegally accumulated funds in a secret stash called riding 127, at the Liberal Party’s headquarters on Waverly St. According to the search warrant, similar activities are suspected to have continued right up until last year. It was mentioned that “Violette Trepanier’s phone records show that from 2012 to 2013, she spoke to marc Bibeau roughly 300 times.”
