Family members of one of the five young Calgarians killed in the city’s most horrible mass slaying broke silence on the eve of their first funerals. According to the family members of Zackariah Rathwell, memories of the good times have helped them cope since he and four others were stabbed to death at a house party in southwest Calgary early last Tuesday.
A statement issued by them on Sunday said that “what was once a quiet and sombre house after the initial news of Zack’s passing, turned into a house full of laughter while people were swapping their memories of Zack.” 21-year-old Rathwell, 27-year-old Lawrence Hong, 23-year-old Josh Hunter, 23-year-old Kaiti Perras and 22-year-old Jordan Segura were killed during a house party that was arranged on the last day of classes at the University of Calgary. Police has confirmed to have laid charges of five counts of first-degree murder to one of the party guests, 22-year-old Matthew de Grood. In their statement, the Rathwell family alleged that “we are devastated by what happened. It is a struggle every day to understand that Zackariah won’t be coming home. He was so close to so many and touched the lives of everyone that he came into contact with.”
A first-year student at Alberta College of Art and Design, Rathwell, used to play in a popular local band Zackariah and the Prophets. According to his mother, Rhonda Rathwell, “he was destined to be a singer” and “he begged for a guitar, he begged for guitar lessons and he played the same song repeatedly: Brick House by the Commodores. It drove everyone in the house crazy.”
