Air Canada has confirmed to have suspended two baggage-handling employees who were seen dropping luggage from a stairway into a bin several metres below. A video was captured of the act and later posted online to be viewed by millions. According to company spokesperson, Angela Mah, the two employees have been suspended in the wake of the now-viral video.
Previously, Air Canada had announced that its two employees are facing dismissal pending the outcome of a company investigation into the incident. A video posted to YouTube last Thursday gained more than 1 million views before Monday morning. According to the man who shot the video, Dwayne Stewart, he saw about a dozen bags being dropped from the stairway. He was flying on a flight from Toronto to Vancouver, and captured the video from inside the plane. The bags in the video were carry-on pieces that couldn’t fit into the plane’s overhead compartments, so passengers were told their bags would need to be stored with the rest of the checked luggage.
According to the official statement issued by Air Canada over the weekend, the company apologized for the incident, calling the employees’ actions “unacceptable.” It said that “the employees involved have been advised that their employment will be terminated pending the outcome of our investigation.” It was added that “we take matters involving the protection of our customers’ personal possessions very seriously. The actions of these individuals are not representative of the vast majority of our employees who work hard every day to take care of our customers.”
