The lawyer for the suspect in internationally reported case of B.C. teen Amanda Todd’s online harassment, Christian van Dijk, has confirmed that he has not received any request to extradite his client from the Netherlands. However, van Dijk alleged that if and when it arrives, he will need time to study it and come up with a strategy to fight it because he questions whether his client will get a fair trial in Canada.

According to a statement issued via an email on Thursday, van Dijk stated that “the question is…if the Canadian judges are still objective since my client is already convicted by many in Canada. He is not guilty until it is proven otherwise, let’s not forget.” On the other hand, the spokesman for the National Public Prosecutor’s Office in the Netherlands, Paul Van Der Zanden, also confirmed that his office is “still awaiting the formal request” for extradition. Additionally, Zanden mentioned during a phone interview on Thursday that “it will be months, and in the meantime, the Dutch investigation will continue.” He explained that the accused will likely go on trial in the Netherlands before being extradited to Canada.

The 35-year-old accused was arrested in Oisterwijk in January after he allegedly encouraged underage girls and adult men to perform sex acts for webcams and then used those images to blackmail the victims. According to the authorities, the accused is suspected of victimizing “dozens” of girls in the Netherlands, England and the U.S. However, the Dutch authorities have not identified the accused due to privacy rules.
